BEARDEN MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE OLYMPIAD |
The Bearden Middle School Science Olympiad is open to any 6th, 7th, or 8th grade student who wishes to tryout for the team(s). |
TEAM ORGANIZATION |
| A Science Olympiad Team consists of 15 students and several alternates. Most events are 2-person events, which means that two students from a school compete as a team against teams from other schools in each of the events. For the past six years we have had enough students to enter two teams in the Regional Tournament - Team A (consisting mainly of 7th and 8th grade students), and Team B (consisting mainly of 6th and 7th grade students). A school may advance only one team to the State Tournament. The competition team for the State Tournament will consist of the top 15 students, regardless of which team they competed on in the the Regional Tournament. ALL team members are taken to the State and National Tournaments |
TRYING OUT FOR THE TEAM |
The specific purposes of the Science Olympiad Program are: 2. To develop teamwork and cooperative learning At the Regional Tournament, the 23 events are scheduled into 5 time slots. At the State Tournament, the 23 events are scheduled into 5 time slots. This means that as many as 6 events may be scheduled in each time slot. The are 15 students to cover the 23 events! 3. To make science education more exciting so more students will enroll in science courses and engage in other science activities like science reading, fairs, meetings, and field trips. 4. To promote high levels of achievement and a commitment to excellence, to demonstrate that students can perform at levels that surpass expectations of even practicing scientists and engineers. 5. To attract more students, particularly females and minorities, to professional and technical careers in science, technology and science teaching. |
